Gerascophobia is an abnormal or persistent fear of growing old or ageing. All things are affected by the passage of time, and they deteriorate as they get older.
Some people like aged, vintage objects, but these old objects can also trigger the fear of growing old. In this tutorial you will learn how to make a metal sign look old and worn in Adobe Photoshop.
The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial:
1. Create the Wall Background
Create a new 850 x 570px document, and create a new layer called Wall Background. Copy and Paste the Old Plaster Wall on this layer.
Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and set the level of Saturation to -57.
Create a Levels adjustment layer and set the levels of the Shadow Input Level to 0, the Midtone Input Level to 1.22, and the Highlight Input Level to 201. Also set the Highlight Output Level to 153.
Create a Selective Color adjustment layer and set the levels Yellows and Cyans.
2. Create the Rounded Rectangle Shape
Create a new layer called Vintage Sign. Pick the Rounded Rectangle Tool and set the Radius to 25 px. Draw a rectangle shape with rounded corners.
Add this layer style to the Vintage Sign layer: Drop Shadow (color
#141715) and Bevel and Emboss (colors:
3. Create the Vintage Sign
Add the Scratched Texture on a new layer above the Vintage Sign layer. Right click on the Scratched Texture layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.
Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color. Right click on the adjustment layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.
Double click on the Selective Color Thumbnail to edit it. From the Colors drop-down, we’ll change the setting for Reds, Yellows, Greens, Whites, and Neutrals.

Add the Car PNG image on a new layer.
Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. Right click on the adjustment layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.
To change the color of the car, double click on the Hue/Saturation Thumbnail to edit it. Set the Hue to 180 and the Saturation to 51.
Go to Image > Trim and make these settings to cut the image.
Create a mask for this layer by clicking on the mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel.
Go to the Scratched Texture layer, keep the Control key pressed, and click on the layer thumbnail of the layer to make a selection. Press Control-C to copy the selection.
Go to the Car layer and on the Channels tab click on the Car Mask to make it visible. Press Control-V to paste the image.
Press Control-D to deselect.
Make sure you are on the Car layer mask thumbnail and go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Set the Input Levels depending on how you want the image to look.
5. Create the Vintage Text Effect
Add the text that you want using the Team Spirit Font type. Use the color
#ffffff for the text and size 200 pt.
Add this layer style to the Vintage Text layer. Drop Shadow (color
000000), Inner Shadow (color

#94274e, location 91%).
If you use the Color Overlay layer style, you can easily change the color of the vintage text.
